What is an attention auction?

An attention auction is a market where visibility itself is the good being sold, continuously, to the highest bidder. The most visible position belongs to whoever has bid the most, and anyone can take it from them at any moment by bidding more. Nothing is ever owned; everything is rented at a price the market sets in public.

The three rules

Why it produces honest prices

Every other attention market hides its prices: influencer rate cards are private, trending placements are negotiated in DMs, ad auctions happen inside a black box. An attention auction inverts that. The current price of the top spot is public, the history of every bid is public, and when two buyers genuinely want the same slot, the price discovery happens in front of the audience, which is itself content: a bidding war is the most-watched thing on the board.

The crypto version

outcrypto.bid runs this mechanism for crypto tokens. Bids are USDC on Base ($1 minimum), every bid is an onchain event, and rank is the time-decayed sum of what each token's community has paid. Because bids are onchain, the whole board can be recomputed by anyone from public data, and because the contract forwards funds instantly and holds nothing, there is nothing to hack or rug. Communities can pool small bids on one token, and AI agents can bid directly over HTTP via x402.

Lineage

The obvious ancestor is the 2005 Million Dollar Homepage, which sold a million pixels at $1 each, once. Its flaw as a market was permanence: early buyers locked the space forever and the story ended. Decaying, perpetually-contested rank fixes that: the market re-prices itself continuously, so the story never ends.
